Gun Violence is a uniquely American public health and safety crisis. No other developed country intentionally allows unrestricted access to easily concealed handguns and military-style assault weapons.

John Rosenthal, Founder and Chair

If you live in Roxbury, Mattapan, or Dorchester, it is easier to find a gun than find a job, and that is the case across America in our poorest neighborhoods… There is a relationship between economic justice, crime reduction, and lower gun crime.’

Stop Handgun Violence is a non-profit organization committed to the prevention of gun violence

Stop Handgun Violence Three Pillars include:

  • Public Awareness: Our highway billboards across the state underscored the gun violence epidemic to over hundreds of thousands of people. More recently, we organized rallies with student activists to promote advocacy!

  • Education: SHV promoted safe storage practices with free-trigger locks. We also co-produced maerpo.org site to educate the public on the MA Extreme Risk Protective Order Law.

  • Advocacy: We’ve been advocating for sensible gun laws for nearly 30 years! SHV was the lead advocate for the Massachusetts Gun Control Act of 1998 (Chapter 180).
